The Legend of the Maneblussers
In the 17th century, a special event gave the people of Mechelen a nickname that they still proudly wear today. One misty night, a Mechelen resident saw an orange glow on the St. Rumbold's Tower and raised the alarm, thinking the tower was on fire. The entire city sprang into action to extinguish the fire, until it was discovered that it was only the reflection of the moon in the mist. Since then, Mechelen residents have been affectionately called "Maneblussers".
